Caribou Calving Grounds Camera Trapping

Remote central Nunavut in Canada
Through this project, I helped train local Inuit in camera-trapping methods on the barren-grounds above the treeline. Two individuals were trained in logistical planning, including grid design, site selection, and equipment procurement. An additional six community members received hands-on field training in camera deployment, including drilling posts into permafrost, securing and activating cameras, and recording clear, standardized field notes.

I spent a full week in Leiden, Netherlands, working alongside leading researchers focused on individual heterogeneity in wild bird and mammal populations. The workshop included hands-on training in Bayesian hierarchical modeling using JAGS.
Caribou Camera Trapping
April 2025
I led remote fieldwork to deploy and retrieve a 9×9 grid of camera traps on the calving grounds of the Bluenose-East caribou herd in Nunavut, Canada. Conducted in partnership with the Indigenous Kugluktuk Angoniatit Association, this work included workshops to train local Inuit guardians in camera-trapping methodologies and involved safely guiding snowmobile teams across the remote Arctic barren-grounds during deployment and retrieval.
Bighorn Sheep Captures and Behavioral Observations
Summer 2017, 2018, and 2019
Supervised by Profs. Marco Festa-Bianchet and Fanie Pelletier (Université de Sherbrooke), I spent a total of 11 months over three field seasons on Ram Mountain, Alberta, Canada. My work included the capture and handling of wild bighorn sheep without anesthetics, as well as detailed behavioral observations related to resource acquisition, dominance hierarchies, and molting.
Arctic Fox Project
Summer 2016
Supervised by Prof. Dominique Berteaux (Université du Québec à Rimouski), I spent three months on remote Bylot Island in Nunavut, in the Canadian High Arctic. During this time, I gained experience engaging with Inuit culture in Pond Inlet, Iqaluit, and Resolute Bay, and had the opportunity to learn from and work alongside Inuit youth. My fieldwork included the live capture and handling of Arctic foxes without anesthetics, behavioral observations focused on foraging and parental care, and conducting lemming abundance transects.

Supervised by Prof. Gilles Gauthier (Université Laval), I spent two weeks on Bylot Island in the Canadian Arctic. My work involved the live capture and handling of brown and collared lemmings using Sherman traps.
American Marten Road Ecology
Summer 2015
Supervised by Prof. Jochen Jaeger (Concordia University), I spent four months in isolation in the boreal forest north of Quebec City. My work included the capture and handling of anesthetized American martens, as well as telemetry and triangulation using VHF radio collars to monitor their movements.
